## What is an SMS payment reminder?

**An SMS payment reminder is a text message sent to a customer's mobile phone before or after an invoice's due date to prompt payment, usually with a link to pay.** It covers one invoice and is short, because a text has room for little more than the invoice number, the amount and the link.

An SMS payment reminder is one channel of an [invoice reminder](https://www.paidnice.com/dictionary/invoice-reminder), which can also go by email. [Dunning](https://www.paidnice.com/dictionary/dunning) is the planned sequence of messages, and a text is often one step in it.

A text is read quickly, so it suits a short nudge close to the due date or just after it. It needs the customer's mobile number and the right to message that number, which varies by country. It is usually sent alongside email reminders, not in place of them.

It is not a call, and it is not a way to chase a disputed invoice. A dispute needs a conversation.
